What time of day are grey Squirrels most active?
Grey squirrels tend to keep the same pattern as humans. They will forage for food most of the time, and in most cases, up to half of their food is nicked off other squirrels. Because squirrels don’t eat all their supply, they bury at least half of their supply to cater for the winter months when food is scarce, and often other squirrels will watch where these are being buried and will dig them up as soon as the owner has left.
The breeding cycle
The grey squirrel breeding cycle begins in January when the males start looking for females. It takes approximately 44 days for a litter to produce young, and the average number of young per litter is 3 or 5. Despite being blind and naked at birth, the young weigh about 1/2 ounce. They stay with their mother for about eight weeks, after which they are ready to leave and fend for themselves. Once this happens, the new adult squirrel will create their own drey, which is a type of nest made from twigs and leaves outdoors.
The grey squirrel can mate any time during the year, but they are most active in late winter or early spring. When mating does occur, it involves chasing after females by the male squirrels. The males may also fight among themselves for access to females. Most mating occurs in March, April, May, and June. Gestation lasts about 44 days on average, with an average litter size of 5 young per female.
