Harlequin Ladybird Control
We are all used to seeing ladybirds around our homes and gardens at a particular time of year, but while these insects are thought of fondly by most of us, some of them are a cause for concern.
The Harlequin ladybird, a species not indigenous to Britain, was introduced to the country from Asia as a method of controlling aphids. Unfortunately, this ladybird has since multiplied to the point at which it has become a pest itself. The main reason for this is that the Harlequin ladybird lacks a predator in the British ecosystem, allowing it to spread without resistance; it also feeds on indigenous species of ladybirds.
Harlequin ladybirds have several distinguishing characteristics. A ladybird is NOT a Harlequin ladybird if it has seven spots, if it is less than five millimetres in size, or if any of its sites are white or cream in colour. It should not be confused with the eyed ladybird, which is relatively large and has fifteen black spots on its burgundy-coloured carapace.
