Telltale Signs You May Have Rats

Instead of spotting the animal itself, it’s often easier to identify a rat problem by recognising the signs they leave behind:

Droppings
One of the most obvious indicators. Brown rat droppings are blunt and capsule-shaped, usually found in clusters. Black rat droppings are thinner, pointed, and more scattered. Fresh droppings appear dark and shiny, while older ones become dry and pale.

Noises at Night
If you hear scratching, scurrying, or gnawing sounds after dark, it could be rats. Black rats tend to stay higher up—in lofts and roof spaces—while brown rats are more commonly found under floors, in walls, or beneath decking.

Tracks and Marks

Burrows in the Ground
Brown rats are known for digging. Look for small holes (around 70–120mm wide) with smooth edges, often near foundations, drains, or garden features.

Hidden Nests
Rats build nests using shredded materials like paper, fabric, or insulation. These are usually tucked away in quiet, undisturbed spaces such as lofts, wall cavities, or under floorboards.

Chew Damage
Rats constantly gnaw to keep their teeth in check. This can result in damage to wires, pipes, wood, and even plastic containers—often leaving rough, jagged bite marks.
