Rats are medium-sized, long-tailed rodents belonging to the superfamily Muroidea. In the UK, two primary types of rats are of concern: the Brown Rat and the Black Rat. Although actual sightings of these nocturnal creatures are rare, several signs indicate their presence.

How to Spot Signs of Rats

Evidence of rats can be identified through the following signs:

1. Rat Droppings: Brown rat droppings are typically rectangular with blunt ends and often found in small groups. In contrast, black rat droppings are pointed and sausage-shaped, scattered in different areas. A single rat can leave around 40 droppings daily. If the droppings are moist and dark, it suggests that rats are nearby.

2. Scratching Noises: Black rats, also known as roof rats, are excellent climbers that often inhabit roofs, rafters, and attics. Scratching noises coming from these areas after dusk may indicate their presence. Brown rats are more likely to produce grinding sounds or chattering noises as they move beneath decking and floorboards.

3. Footprints, Tail Swipes, and Smears: Rats leave four-toed footprints on their front feet and five-toed footprints on their back feet. These tracks are most easily seen in muddy or dusty areas. To spot them, use a flashlight aimed at a low angle. Additionally, rats leave dark grey smears on surfaces where they frequently rub their fur. However, since smears can persist over time, they are not always reliable indicators of an active infestation.

4. Running Tracks: Rats often follow the same established routes, creating dark, greasy marks along walls, floorboards, and on well-worn paths in grass and low vegetation.

5. Burrows: Burrows are holes ranging from one to four inches wide, featuring smooth edges. Brown rats are skilled at digging intricate tunnel systems, with entrance holes measuring 70-120mm in diameter. You can find these burrows in grassy banks, under tree roots, and around the edges of paving and drain covers.

6. Nests: Black rat nests are typically located indoors, such as in lofts, attics, under floorboards, and in other dark, less-used spaces.

7. Gnawing: Visible gnaw marks can be found on electrical cables, pipework, wooden fixtures, and plastic garbage cans. Rats usually leave behind large, rough teeth marks.
