BumbleBee Identification
Bumblebees are much larger, and rounder than their cousin, the honey bee, and have a distinctive furry appearance. There are 24 species of bumblebee in the United Kingdom. Most people are familiar with the more common variations, which display yellow and black banding on their thorax and abdomen and have whitetails. However, a relatively new introduction to the United Kingdom is the increasingly invasive tree bumblebee, which originates in Mainland Europe. Tree bumblebees can be identified by their unique colouring, markedly different from the local species described above. Their predominant colour is reddish-brown, with a black abdomen and whitetail.
BumbleBee Nests
Bumblebees, including tree bumblebees, will usually build their nests away from human settlements. However, there are times when they select a domestic garden or commercial property in which to build their nest. The nests are built below ground level by the queen bee. The resulting colony can eventually contain up to 400 bees and will consist mainly of females. Males only hatch toward the end of the season. Tree bumblebees have a habit of building their nests in bird boxes, a common feature of many British gardens. This means that they come into contact with humans more frequently, which is not ideal and results in many unpleasant and unwanted encounters.
Interaction Between BumbleBees and Humans BumbleBee
It is a common misconception that bumblebees don’t sting. However, the females do possess a sting and, unlike the common honey bee, are capable of stinging again and again. These bees are usually docile, but if their nests are threatened, they can become highly aggressive. The closer they are to humans, the more likely this is to happen. The colony could prove especially dangerous if people in the surrounding area are allergic to bee stings.
