Professional Standish Woodworm Treatment

What is woodworm?

Woodworm isn’t actually a worm of any kind. There are four stages to the life of this wood-eating larvae.

1. The egg stage – A mature female beetle lays her eggs in the crevices of wood with some moisture still in it – so the newer timber is best for them. Older, aged wood is usually a lot drier so this might not be as attractive to the beetles. These eggs are very small and difficult see, so aren’t usually noticed.

2. The larvae stage – Straight after hatching the larvae burrow deep into the wood and stay there for between two to five years. They chew their way through the timber, turning the pulp into a food source as they go. As they near the end of their larval stage, they go near to the surface of the wood where they grow in size and pupate into a beetle.

3. The beetle stage – When they turn into a beetle, they break out of the wood leaving a small, round flight hole. These holes are the visible signs which show there is a woodworm infestation present. There can be hundreds of flight holes on once a piece of timber.

4. The mating stage – As a beetle, these insects don’t cause any further damage to wood but they are there to mate and begin the cycle again. They live for about 4 weeks at this stage. They often don’t need to travel very far to meet a mate, and as such re-infestation of the same area is highly possible.

How do I know if I need treatment for woodworm removal?

You will need Standish woodworm treatment for furniture or structural if the infestation is active. Tell-tale signs are sawdust remaining in the area and fresh-looking flight holes. A good pest control technician will be able to advise you if you are unsure.

Why is it important to have a proper Standish woodworm treatment spray applied?

When there are many insects burrowing inside one piece of timber, it can severely weaken it to the point that it might crumble and give way. This is especially worrisome if the woodworm infestation occurs in weight-bearing wood, like in the roof or staircase. In beautiful pieces of furniture, it can ruin the look of it, and make it very expensive to restore. The type of treatment needed depends on the species of the beetle present, experienced professionals will know the best course of action to take.
