Because rats are mostly nocturnal, you’re unlikely to see them during the day. However, they leave behind plenty of tell-tale signs that can help you detect their presence early.

Common Signs of a Rat Infestation

Droppings
Rat droppings are one of the clearest indicators. Brown rats leave blunt-ended, rectangular droppings in clusters, while black rat droppings are slimmer, pointed, and often scattered. A single rat can produce up to 40 droppings daily. Fresh droppings appear dark and moist.

Noises at Night
Unusual sounds after dark can be a warning sign. Black rats, also known as roof rats, are excellent climbers and are often heard scratching in lofts, attics, and roof spaces. Brown rats, on the other hand, tend to stay lower, making grinding or scurrying noises beneath floors or decking.

Footprints and Smear Marks
In dusty or muddy areas, you may notice footprints or tail marks. Rats have four toes on their front feet and five on their back feet. They also leave greasy, dark smears along walls and surfaces where they regularly travel, although these marks may remain even after activity has stopped.

Well-Worn Paths
Rats are creatures of habit and tend to follow the same routes repeatedly. Over time, this creates visible runways—greasy marks along walls indoors or worn tracks through grass and vegetation outdoors.

Burrows
Brown rats are known for digging. Their burrows typically appear as smooth-edged holes, around 1–4 inches wide, often found along banks, under tree roots, or near paving and drains.

Nesting Areas
Black rats prefer to nest indoors, particularly in quiet, undisturbed places such as lofts, attics, and beneath floorboards.

Gnaw Marks
Rats constantly gnaw to keep their teeth in check. You might find rough, noticeable bite marks on wood, plastic, pipes, and even electrical cables—posing a serious safety risk.
