Edible Dormouse

Edible Dormouse

The edible dormouse is the largest of the dormice species and is generally not found in the UK, but there is a population of 30,000 or so of them near Tring in England brought about by an escapee from Lionel Walter Rothschild’s estate in 1902.

As the name suggests this dormouse can be eaten and was considered a delicacy by the Romans who would capture them and fatten them up before eating them.

They are still considered a delicacy in Slovenia.
